Von Allmen in running for world double after combined downhill
Switzerland's Franjo Von Allmen remained on course for a tilt at a golden double after the downhill section of the men's team combined event at the World Ski Championships in Saalbach on Wednesday.
Von Allmen, who won the individual downhill on Sunday, completed the descent of the 2.9km-long Schneekristall course in 1min 42.11sec, just two-hundredths behind teammate and downhill bronze medallist Alexis Monney.
Italy's Dominik Paris was third, at 0.46sec, with Austrian Daniel Hemetsberger fourth (+0.95) and Italian Florian Schieder fifth (+0.97), the only racers to come within a second of Monney.
Von Allmen's teammate Loic Meillard will now take on Monney's partner Tanguy Nef in the slalom, scheduled for 1215 GMT.
Other slalom specialists who will be licking their lips at a chance of a podium placing include Paris' partner Alex Vinatzer, Norway's Timon Haugan, with 1.05sec to make up, Switzerland's Daniel Yule (+1.14) and France's Olympic champion Clement Noel (+1.15).
Austrian Manuel Feller was left with a 1.31sec deficit after his partner Vincent Kriechmayr, who won downhill silver in the Austrian resort, could only finish 13th in the morning action which was affected by fog.
