USA Eagles remove interim tag in naming Lawrence head coach
Scott Lawrence was named head coach of the USA Eagles on Thursday, removing the interim tag under which he served in the role for the past year, USA Rugby announced.
Lawrence was also named general manager of the US men's rugby union squad, whose next main objective will be qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia ahead of the United States hosting the 2031 edition.
The 48-year-old American, a former flanker for the Eagles and ex-coach for Atlanta's Major League Rugby team, joined the US national team as an assistant coach in May 2017.
Lawrence became the interim head coach in January 2023 to replace Gary Gold after the Eagles failed to qualify for last year's Rugby World Cup in France.
"There's just an overwhelming sense of gratitude," Lawrence said, saying the team made "a positive step forward" in 2023.
"I couldn't be more pleased to continue the mission of preparing our national teams in a uniquely American way that represents the values of our country and inspires a new generation of players to do great things in 2031."
The US national team went 4-2 last year and Lawrence also helped fundraising and performance moves that helped the US under-20 squad qualify for the World Rugby Trophy event for the first time since 2016.
The Eagles will compete in a revived Pacific Nations Cup in 2024 against Japan, Canada, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji.
"In the short time Scott has taken on the role, he demonstrated an ability to align the key elements of the program that will ultimately shape our long term success," said USA Rugby general manager of high performance Tamara Sheppard.
"Scott has a strong desire to do something big, with a clear vision for the journey ahead. We firmly believe he is the right person to lead the team in 2024 and beyond."
