Panthers hire Canales as new head coach
The Carolina Panthers have agreed terms with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their new head coach, the NFL Team said on Thursday.
The Panthers endured a poor season, finishing bottom of the NFC South with a 2-15 record with rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
Head coach Frank Reich was fired after 11 games of the past regular season with special teams coordinator Chris Tabor placed in interim charge until the end of the season.
Canales, 42, was previously with the Seattle Seahawks before joining Tampa last year -- he is Carolina's second major hire following the appointment of new general manager Dan Morgan.
Morgan worked with Canales for eight years in Seattle when the coach operated under Pete Carroll and with quarterbacks Russell Wilson and then Geno Smith.
"I'm excited to work alongside Dave again," Morgan told the team's official website.
"His background coaching multiple position groups has given him a great understanding of what it takes to build a successful team. His infectious personality resonates with players and everyone who comes in contact with him. I'm confident that will translate to the field."
Panthers owner David Tepper expressed optimism about the appointment.
"Dave's background is rooted in success. He has an innovative mindset and positive energy that connects well with players and staff. We are impressed with his ability to bring out the best in players," he added.
Canales will be the seventh head coach in Panthers franchise history.
